Karla: Thanks so much to both of you for taking the time to chat with SurfStitch! We love having 8 Other Reasons on the site and we’re really excited for all of our customers to enjoy the brand too. We want to get to a place where we can offer accessories to suit every girl’s style and every girl’s outfit. I guess I’d just like to start off with a simple one – what kind of girl do you see 8OR catering for?
Charles: Unapologetically sexy and always perfectly undone – she is a stone cold fox!
Anthony: The 8OR girl is a ‘fashion-obsessed-edgy-risk taker, with a subtle feminine side. She loves everything chained and jeweled.
K: If you could describe 8OR in five words, what would they be?
C: Unique, bold, fun, clashing, daring.
A: Edgy, masculine, juxtaposed, rough, refined.
K: It’s very interesting that you both don’t come from fashion backgrounds, but from industrial design and photography! How does this affect your designs and your creativity in fashion?
C: I look at fashion and design in a completely different light – I look at common design principles, applicable to architecture and industrial design, and apply them to jewelry. A lot of my work is very conceptually driven.
A: It allows me to be more diverse with what I’m creating – I’m not limited to what I’m designing. Photography has opened my mind to a whole different world of fashion.
K: It’s obvious that youth fashion has moved away from the pearls and diamonds reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn’s era, and into the more edgy and affordable realm of costume jewellery. Do you think jewellery’s in for a turn-around to more traditional styles any time soon, or will we be bracing ourselves for even more edge?
C: Fashion in general is constantly evolving but always paying homage to past and present eras. I think when looking at edgier or modern designs, there are still traditional design elements present. I don’t think traditional classic designs will ever fade; they will just continue to evolve.
A: A lot more edge is in the works I’m sure. We love the idea of juxtaposing the two eras – it makes everything more interesting and unique.
K: Tell us about the inspiration behind your ‘Glitter Goes to War’ range about to hit SurfStitch’s shores?
C: The concept concentrates on various juxtapositions – dark vs. light, feminine vs. masculine and matte vs. shiny. The signature 8OR style is still present but shows a nice evolution of style and branding. The connotation of WAR evokes a sense of empowerment and bravery – we want our customers to feel when wearing the bold pieces.
A: The range was inspired by the idea of mixing the pretty feminine aspects of fashion with the hard, edgy, masculine nature of chains and heavy metals. We wanted the collection to be a genre of it’s own.
K: We’re seeing lots of spiked, studded, textured, heavy chain and neon detail in your current ranges. Can you give us a hint of what’s in the works next?
C: The ranges are constantly evolving – being reflective of a certain muse, era or concept.
The upcoming collection showcases some brave new finishes we haven’t worked with before and the introduction of new styles – including a coveted head piece and ear cuffs.
A: The next range is looking very different – each collection telling a new story. I can definitely tell you it’s looking very jeweled and feminine with a mix of pop colours and new metals.
K: Charles and Anthony, you guys work as a creative duo. You know the question on everyone’s mind – do you ever have creative differences?
C: To answer simply yes, however I wouldn’t change it. Our creative difference allows us to showcase two personalities fused together to create 8OR. The brand is a reflection of us and our vision.
A: Just as any team of creative people, we definitely do have our different views but we have come to use this as an advantage to really mix and juxtapose two unique ideas into one piece.
K: OK, a little less business and little more fun. Where do you go and what do you do to switch off and find inspiration?
C: LA – the city of Angeles is an inspiring, fast paced design hub filled with daily inspirations and endless possibilities
A: Los Angeles – it is just filled with inspiration everywhere you turn. We often take our laptops up to the roof top of our L.A. office and just design for hours looking over all of the city, it’s a surreal experience.
K: If you could top off the clothing of ANY runway show on the planet with 8OR jewellery, which designer would it be for and why?
C: Balenciaga – I have a real admiration for their clean lines, attention to detail and wearable, fashion-forward tailored approach to fashion
A: Alexander McQueen – not only is it my favorite brand but the runway shows are always out of this world, always creative, crazy and original.
K: And last question: your favourite item on SurfStitch right now (it’s not allowed to be from 8OR ?
C: The Waiting for the Sun Jean Paul Sunglasses in Cognac. So simple but so very cool.
A: The Stussy L.A. Lightning Muscle Dress.
