Cannes Film Festival 2013

article-2325095-19CC6DC5000005DC-939_964x698

The 66th edition of the glamorous Cannes Film Festival kicked off in the French Riviera yesterday. Baz Luhrmann’s lavish take on the classic The Great Gatsby opened the festival with stars including Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman and Isla Fisher gracing the red carpet despite the windy and drenching weather. The horrible weather didn’t manage to ruin the high spirits although the hemlines had to be watched and hair and make up excused!

The film world royalty all port at the picturesque French Riviera for the 12 day festival which is filled with beautiful people and amazing cinematography. We here at SurfStitch are lusting over the high attention to detail and breathtaking work of some of the world’s best couture gowns on show on the red carpet. Great Gatsby star, Carey Mulligan, stole the show in her baby pink couture Dior dress while model of the moment Cara Delvingne sported a Burberry black lace floor length gown.

Take inspiration from the movie elite and their black tie events on a smaller, much more understated level with lace sleeves, bright bursts of colour and attention to detail pieces. While we can’t all be so lucky to wear the works of Dior we can always dream through these images and the SurfStitch pieces below.

erin-wasson-style-crush-L-6Z1SyZ

She is the girl that everyone wants to be friends with. She is effortlessly cool, extremely personable, has an enviable wardrobe and is the type of girl you can image yourself having the best time around, every time. She is, of course, Erin Wasson. Inspiring us on a daily basis with her 90s vibes and rock and roll appearance complete with tattoos, tousled hair and that comfortable tomboyish look that she seems to perfect.

Wasson not only stirs attention for her facial features and banging body but her personal style has captivated us on the style scene too. Model, (including Victoria Secrets), stylist and designer of label Low Luv, Wasson is the complete package. With staple wardrobe essentials including t-shirts, denim shorts, leather pants and statement accessories she has an easy yet refined style. In an interview with Elle.com she describes her look as:

“My style has always been the same idea. Very free, easy, relaxed, and slightly androgynous… I’ve never been a girly-girl, never drawn to things that are fussy. And the older I get, the more basic I get. I look at pictures of the stuff I wore five years ago and am like, “Wow, I was really going there.” I’ve become so simple these days. I like the idea of not looking at trends, not being driven by them. I like what I like and that’s it.”

Mens Trend: The Drop Crotch

9b88a4635811f437076e79cbf258c591

The drop crotch jean and pant is a new and daring trend not for the faint hearted. However, when done right it is a fresh style that gives a street edge to ordinary jeans. For some this look may be a bit too much, but if you style it with a basic tee and sneakers you will have a statement, edgy look. Don’t ever get this look confused with the MC hammer pant, this is definitely not a baggy, loose style circa 1980s. To stop you getting confused between the two don’t go for a loose drop crotch to your knees instead choose a more subtle cut with a tapered leg. 61d4b0e2e11b5d0ce808d61a73f9a802 9577e934667e0907a883b4e484ea67a7

2013 Met Gala- Punk: Chaos to Couture.

Ever since the theme of the 2013 Met Gala was announced we have been beyond excited to see what the most fashionable women in the world wear to clash the seemingly conflicting themes of chaos and couture. We were not disappointed. The 2013 theme Punk: Chaos to Couture, saw the heavy metals, peaking flesh, razor sharp cuts and shockingly short hemlines of the punk era turned into pieces of modern art in the form of couture gowns wore by the entertainment and fashion industries finest.

Some stuck perfectly to the theme dressing in black with mesh detailing and leather features all topped off with heavy eyeliner and wicked hair do’s:

The Perfect Punks:

Others went in typically Met Gala fashion and made outfit and accessory choices so wild that they could only possibly be attending the famously flamboyant fashion event.

Sophisticated style was another turn taken by many attendee’s. Sleek and polished gowns were often still accessorized with a heavy liquid eyeliner or a dark berry lip in a nod to the nights theme.

Style Inspiration: Christine Centenera

It’s no surprise that I chose Christine Centenera as my style inspiration, I absolutely envy her wardrobe and applaud her stylistic choices (who doesn’t?!). Her recent stint around the European fashion shows and MBFWA left a trail of street style photographers tripping over their feet trying to capture her every look. She is of course the magazine insider that has left me, and the rest of the world, green with envy.

The Vogue Senior Fashion Editor has her perfectly manicured hands in every pot also being a celebrity stylist, street style icon and the fashion mind behind Kanye West’s fashion line. Frequently seen wearing Josh Goot (who also doubles as her boyfriend), Ksubi, Celine, Givenchy and Isabel Marant, this Editor never manages to step a foot wrong. Her minimal and effortless look is thrown together so perfectly that she masters the fine line between polished yet boyish cool. The thing I love most is her ability to put everyday items together whether it’s a black structured skirt, boyfriend jeans or a white shirt and mix them together with statement shoes and accessories.

She religiously graces the street style blogs and is the epitome of statement chic reminding us why she holds the title of Vogue Fashion Editor. With a colour palette favouring black, white, nude and grey Centenera experiments with textures and fabrics to make her look a stand out. Paired with ‘I just woke up’ choppy hair and you have one style diary that you sure wish you could call your own!

Steal this Fashion Editor’s look at SurfStitch.
