Stripes are an absolute wardrobe must have. A wardrobe staple throughout the decades, stripes first came in to vogue in the 1920s and have not gone out of fashion since.
The timelessness of the print is evident when you look back over pictures of style icons from the past century such as James Dean, Audrey Hepburn and Edie Sedgwick.
Pair stripes with anything from denim to leather.

The 66th edition of the glamorous Cannes Film Festival kicked off in the French Riviera yesterday. Baz Luhrmann’s lavish take on the classic The Great Gatsby opened the festival with stars including Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman and Isla Fisher gracing the red carpet despite the windy and drenching weather. The horrible weather didn’t manage to ruin the high spirits although the hemlines had to be watched and hair and make up excused!
The film world royalty all port at the picturesque French Riviera for the 12 day festival which is filled with beautiful people and amazing cinematography. We here at SurfStitch are lusting over the high attention to detail and breathtaking work of some of the world’s best couture gowns on show on the red carpet. Great Gatsby star, Carey Mulligan, stole the show in her baby pink couture Dior dress while model of the moment Cara Delvingne sported a Burberry black lace floor length gown.
Take inspiration from the movie elite and their black tie events on a smaller, much more understated level with lace sleeves, bright bursts of colour and attention to detail pieces. While we can’t all be so lucky to wear the works of Dior we can always dream through these images and the SurfStitch pieces below.
Go pretty and girly with shades of pink from blush to bright, volumous skirts or take cue from Nicole Kidman with floral motifs and high detailing.

Ever since the theme of the 2013 Met Gala was announced we have been beyond excited to see what the most fashionable women in the world wear to clash the seemingly conflicting themes of chaos and couture. We were not disappointed. The 2013 theme Punk: Chaos to Couture, saw the heavy metals, peaking flesh, razor sharp cuts and shockingly short hemlines of the punk era turned into pieces of modern art in the form of couture gowns wore by the entertainment and fashion industries finest.
Some stuck perfectly to the theme dressing in black with mesh detailing and leather features all topped off with heavy eyeliner and wicked hair do’s:
The Perfect Punks:
Others went in typically Met Gala fashion and made outfit and accessory choices so wild that they could only possibly be attending the famously flamboyant fashion event.
The Wonderfully Wild:
Sarah Jessica Parker.
Look at that hair piece!!!
Sophisticated style was another turn taken by many attendee’s. Sleek and polished gowns were often still accessorized with a heavy liquid eyeliner or a dark berry lip in a nod to the nights theme.
Sleek And Sophisticated:
While others, there was no better way to explain their looks other than…

It’s another night of glitz and glam and a rolled out red carpet for the Hollywood A listers. The MTV Movie Awards is known for it’s high entertainment and often controversial night of nights. It was a night to be nothing short of amazing being hosted by the hilarious Aussie and star of movie Pitch Perfect, Rebel Wilson. Performances by Selena Gomez and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis broke up the night with star favourites Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook winning Best Male Performance and Best Kiss, Jamie Foxx for his WTF Moment in Django Unchained and host Rebel took out the top spot for Breakthrough Performance.
On the red carpet front it was a sea of white, gold and black with these staple colours proving to be the winning favourites of the night. Karlie Kloss and Kylie Jenner both opted for the white crop and white pencil skirt combo while make up was minimal and hair was sleek.
Take a look at my favourite red carpet looks below and shop SurfStitch pieces inspired by the stars.

Johnny Depp has been a style icon for decades but let’s have a look at 90s Depp for a bit of inspiration. Here at SurfStitch we have been telling you the 90s trend is really coming back with a vengeance so we are looking at two killer trends – grunge and greaser. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and see we will show you how to blend a bit old school and new school!

There’s no shame in having a man crush – masquerade it as a style icon and you’re good to go. If you’re going to choose anyone, Chace Crawford is a good choice. Half preppy chic, half New York suave, Chace Crawford and his character on TV Series Gossip Girl have for the wardrobe thing right.
From collared shirts rolled to (but not past) the elbow, to woolen knits and chinos, Nate/Chace or whatever you want to call him, seems to know how to keep classy even in a casual setting. Chase his style by donning a long-sleeved shirt with your skinny jeans, a woolen knit with your chinos, and a perfectily tailored suit jacket for those more formal occasions.
Take a look at some of his best, and at how you can steal his style from SurfStitch.

Every year, those of us who can’t watch avidly due to being glued to our desks on a weekday, wait for the tabloids to publish the dresses worn at the Golden Globes. One of the most prestigious celebrity events of the year occurred yesterday, and we haven’t missed a beat. What did we take away from it? Whites, creams and pastels were huge, and the long gown with a wide train certainly didn’t go amiss.
Take a look at some styling straight from the red carpet! While we here at SurfStitch aren’t in the formal gown game, we have added some Golden-Globe inspired semi-formal dresses for you to have a look at!
