Coachella Recap. Best & Worst Moments.

Three days traipsing through the Californian desert at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, we were exhausted and sunburned, but mostly astounded with all the incredible music. It would be easy to say that Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and hologram Tupac were the highlight for the whole weekend but with so many other amazing artists performing live it would be selling them short. Check out the highlights and low-points of our trip here!

Although Azealia Banks only performed for 20 minutes, that 20 minutes was raw and hypnotic. We all wanted more, but am sure we will be seeing a lot more of Azealia over the next few years.

Janet Jackson…need I say more?

The Weeknd hands down. His sexy, soul voice had girls throwing their panties in the air.

Alicia Silverstone was spotted sporting a plaid button-up shirt, destroyed boyfriend jeans and bubba Bear Blu. So cute!

40-degree heat. Dehydrated. Endless drink lines. And the most perfect, juiciest, watermelon wedge ever.

When Florence from Florence And The Machine declared her love for her fans and then asked the audience to proclaim their love for each other. Every person in the crowd turned to who they were with and gave them a hug. Such a special moment.

Most notable surprise appearance of the weekend was John Fogerty during the Black Keys’ set!

Hands Down, 3 Best Accessories From Coachella.

Coachella weekend two ended in a bang, with exceptional performances and certainly, fashionable festival style. So it’s time we take it to the next level and get up close and personal with some of the top accessories Coachella has to offer. Let’s be honest…accessories, cross body bags and cute-as backpacks stole the show! Here’s a closer look at some of our standout statement pieces.

One of the key trends at this years Coachella was the boho, vintage look with outfits encompassing floral and Aztec prints, denim cut-offs, fringing and of course, cross body bags. Ideal styling for any festival, the cross body bag is perfect for dancing in the big tents, and is extremely practical!

Practical and trendy, the backpack makes quite the impression at this years Coachella Fest. And it’s no wonder really, with backpacks recently making a regular appearance on the tasteful shoulders of celebs such as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Whitney Port and Rachel Bilson.

Blogger Diary. Coachella Day 3 Music Round Up.

The final day of Coachella 2012 was once again stifling hot. As we made our way to the main stage we could hear Santigold blasting out tunes from her latest album Master Of My Make Believe. Despite the heat, Santigold managed to draw a huge crowd in the 40-degree heat…one of only a few that could.

As the sun began to set, it was the perfect backdrop to The Weeknd’s soulful, baby-making music and the crowd went nuts. On the big screen we could see a young lady openly weeping, whilst there were even reports of fans holding up their panties in the air.

Rushing over to the Mojave tent, we managed to enjoy the last few songs of Gotye’s performance. Engaging the audience in a sing-along with everybody’s favourite “Somebody That I Used To Know”, he powered through popular songs from his Making Mirrors album. Unfortunately, after hearing the knockout, the crowd had gotten their fix and began to file out.

I, along with thousands of others had high hopes for Girl Talks set, and he certainly exceeded all expectations. It was clear that front man, Gregg Gillis’ had an appetite for upbeat rap and pop, as he created a 45 minute set of sing along bliss! His music captivates the audience with his creation of new supergroups – Bruce Spingsteen fronting N.E.R.D is just one example. He did not need a hologram to keep the audience’s attention.

Gillis, must lose 10 kgs each set he plays, as he enters the stage in trackies and a hoodie and never, and I mean never stops to take a break from head banging and dancing like a raver.
Enjoyed this set from start to finish, he was one of the highlights of our Coachella experience.

Next on our hit list was the amazing and enchanting Florence & The Machine. An all time favourite of mine, she did not disappoint. At one point dedicating a song “Rabbit Heart” to the ladies. “This is for the ladies,” she stated. “I want to see girls on shoulders. Be strong, boys”. And just as we were about to leave the stage to secure a good position for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, we were confronted with hit “Dog Days Are Over.”

After hearing reports from the first weekend expectations were high for headlining act Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, featuring the hologram of Tupac. With guest appearances by 50 cent and Eminem the performance was definitely a must-see. The perfect end to Coachella 2012!

Trend Report. Coachella Boots.

The fields of Coachella are dusty and dirty…so it’s only natural for tons of festival-goers to be rocking boots. We’re talking – cowboy boots, motorcycle-inspired boots, low-boots, high-boots, flat boots – pretty much every type of boot you can image. The more scuffed up the better!

Streetwear designer Isabel Maran’s “Dicker” boots from a few seasons back are still heavily influencing the market. She was single-handedly responsible for starting the trend a few years ago of the low boot with the low heel, or cowboy boot heel. Featuring in hues of black, dark brown and grey, these boots are definitely the go to style for winter ’12 and beyond.

And no wonder. The flat and low-heeled boots can be teamed with everything from dresses and skirts to jeans, leggings and shorts! Very cute.

Blogger Diary. Coachella Day 2 Music Round Up.

Saturday, the second day of Coachella is up! Yesterday saw the likes of some of my personal favourites – AWOLNATION, Kaiser Cheifs, Mt Eden, Martin Solveig, Sebastian Ingrosso, David Guetta, Kasabian, Feist, Miike Snow, Bon Iver, Kaskade, Radiohead and last but definitely not least Sub Focus.

To avoid heat stroke, we headed in a little later; I’m guessing it was a cool 35 degrees when we got in… Clearly not cool! We decided to hit up the Ferris Wheel first thing – The quintessential Coachella sunset image. From up the top there is a breathtaking view to enjoy; you could see the entire Coachella set up and the rolling mountains behind. It made me realise how truly isolated this location is. It was a view that I will never forget.

After the ride, we went straight to the drinks tents to hydrate our poor bodies. One of the only things that I didn’t love about Coachella is that you have to go into certain caged areas to drink, which means you can’t get amongst the other ragers closer to the stage with a drink in your hand. Something that became increasing apparent is that the drinks area is the perfect place to meet rad people. In here we met an American guy called Alex who had fallen in love with a Canadian girl called Alice… They were planning on heading to Vegas to elope, how crazy is that! These guys were so much fun to chat to, we decided to head out and watch Martin Solveig & then Sebastian Ingrosso together. Martins hit song ‘Hello’ went off! Followed by Sebastian’s pulsating rave in the Sahara tent – The ultimate kick start for my afternoon.

We left our new friends at that and went into get some pizza, meeting yet another group of cool people. This time it was Londoners Georgia & Nadine. They convinced us to go and watch Flying Lotus – a DJ who I had never heard of. So we caught a bit of that and then hurried over to watch David Guetta in the tent next door. Clearly we were not going to miss him, especially because Usher had jumped on stage with him the weekend before! I loved being amongst the overflowing crowd as he pumped out tunes that everyone could sing along to, as well as some awesome remixes of Gotye and Aviici. We couldn’t stay for the entire set as we had somewhere to be – Bon Iver.

As night fell, the main stage saw the hushed beauty of Bon Iver. Bon Iver is just magical as he delivers one of the most consistent performances of the day. Justin Vernon the lead singer had shaved his head – You would have noticed if you were lucky enough to get up close and personal, or thanks to the massive TV screens, if you were one of the hundreds like me chilling on the grass. When Skinny Love began, the crowd erupted. Everyone enthusiastically pulled themselves from grass and moved forward to get closer to the stage. His voice, coupled with the location made this my favourite Coachella experience so far.

Another day is over, can’t wait for tonight’s line up … It’s going to be insane!
