1 Item, 3 Ways: Boyfriend Jean

wpid-Photo-18032013-1219-AM

The boyfriend jean is this winter’s go-to style jean. Forget the patterned, coloured and cropped styles of the past and look to this versatile and comfy jean. Some may look at this style with a bit of hesitation, after all when you think of baggy, ripped jeans not too many flattering images come to mind, however this style can be easily dressed up or worn casual and distressed for many occasions. Boyfriend jeans have been all over the street style blogs and were paraded outside the fashion week cycle copious times so we have no hesitation that this style is hot! I love these Lee Dylan Jean with just the right amount of rips, a cuffed hem and loose feel they have become as versatile as the LBD. See how you can wear one pair of jeans in many different ways from dressed up in leather accents and heels, dressed down with a neon knit or worn in a classic way with a stripped tee and jacket thrown on for the cooler months.

Dress it up with leather.

E63A8744

Winter has well and truly set in so there couldn’t be a better time to let you have a sneak peak at the SurfStitch Winter ’13 Campaign. This campaign is all about those little moments in life that last a lifetime; grabbing your best friends and going on spontaneous road trips, camping by the beach with moonlit bonfires, breathing in the fresh crisp air of the rainforest and being in the company of the ones that make you laugh until your belly is sore.

Take key from the SurfStitch lookbook this winter and opt for layering pieces where you can throw on jumpers with your boyfriend jeans, knits over dresses, slouchy pants, statement jackets and clothes that are comfy enough to sleep in. The standard winter colours are always on show with stripes, denim and khaki being a main focus, however this winter hails a breakthrough of colour with winter florals, bright burst of neons and contrasting hues coming through.

Although we hail the hot summer weather, winter has it’s own special little quirks like wearing your boyfriends jumper, bike rides to hidden places, enjoying the comfort of your home and appreciating the small moments where time stands still. The SurfStitch Winter Lookbook has arrived and it’s time to make the best out of every moment, be young and carefree and most of all, be a wild spirit at heart.

Cannes Film Festival 2013

article-2325095-19CC6DC5000005DC-939_964x698

The 66th edition of the glamorous Cannes Film Festival kicked off in the French Riviera yesterday. Baz Luhrmann’s lavish take on the classic The Great Gatsby opened the festival with stars including Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman and Isla Fisher gracing the red carpet despite the windy and drenching weather. The horrible weather didn’t manage to ruin the high spirits although the hemlines had to be watched and hair and make up excused!

The film world royalty all port at the picturesque French Riviera for the 12 day festival which is filled with beautiful people and amazing cinematography. We here at SurfStitch are lusting over the high attention to detail and breathtaking work of some of the world’s best couture gowns on show on the red carpet. Great Gatsby star, Carey Mulligan, stole the show in her baby pink couture Dior dress while model of the moment Cara Delvingne sported a Burberry black lace floor length gown.

Take inspiration from the movie elite and their black tie events on a smaller, much more understated level with lace sleeves, bright bursts of colour and attention to detail pieces. While we can’t all be so lucky to wear the works of Dior we can always dream through these images and the SurfStitch pieces below.

With staple wardrobe essentials including t-shirts, denim shorts, leather pants and statement accessories she has an easy yet refined style. In an interview with Elle.com she describes her look as:

“My style has always been the same idea. Very free, easy, relaxed, and slightly androgynous… I’ve never been a girly-girl, never drawn to things that are fussy. And the older I get, the more basic I get. I look at pictures of the stuff I wore five years ago and am like, “Wow, I was really going there.” I’ve become so simple these days. I like the idea of not looking at trends, not being driven by them. I like what I like and that’s it.”

The recent shoot she did for Elle Italia is one of the greatest examples of eye popping, pattern clashing, fashion flare I have seen in a while and Katelynne’s natural beauty radiates as she pulls off fashion forward tomboy in the most charming way.

Women’s Must Have Wardrobe Staples.

We are constantly getting a stream of information from all directions of the latest trends and fashions. One minute it’s stripes, then prints, neon, block colours and floral. With such a vast range of up to the minute trends it’s easy to get lost amongst it all. Sometimes the best thing for you and your style is to take a step back and strip your wardrobe bare to reveal the must have essentials in your closet that will stay there even when the trends don’t. It’s not always about wearing the most expensive outfit, following the latest trends or walking around dotting the “it” bag. Mix your staples with those current trends and one-off pieces with an injection of your true personality and you will have a sartorialist wardrobe to be envied.

Below are the must have wardrobe staples that any stylish women should have on current rotation.

1. A Plain White Tee: I guarantee you will never love anything more than your plain white tee (unless it’s your plain white singlet). This item can be transformed time and time again, it can be thrown on with jeans, heels and wayfarers for effortless ease or with your denim cut offs and thongs for those hot summer days, a statement skirt and chunky necklace for a night out or use as a layer piece this winter under floral bomber jackets and light khaki anoraks.

1. Betty Basics London Tee- White  2. As Colour Shutter Tee- White  3. Betty Basics Miami Singlet- White

2. A Well Fitted Blazer: Every woman needs a well fitting blazer in her wardrobe. It takes you from work to the bar in ease and is an investment that will be worth it a million times over. This season try the ‘short suit’ trend and pair your blazer with some tailored shorts for an updated version of man style dressing.

1. Tigerlily Saz Jacket- Indigo 2. Tigerlily Saz Shorts- Indigo 3. Urge Stina Flat- Khaki Leopard

3. The Classic LBD: Karl Lagerfeld simply put it: ”One is never over-dressed or under-dressed with a Little Black Dress.” The LBD formal name Little Black Dress has been an icon in women’s dressing since Audrey Hepburn put it onto the map. It is the epitome of classic style and continues to be the most timeless piece a woman could own. Change your accessories, hair style or even make up and you have a new outfit entirely.

  1. Friend of Mine Drama Dress- Black White      2. Ladakh Isabella Lace Dress- Black    3. Fate Mod Revival Dress- Black

4. Black or Dark Jeans: Denim  jeans can take you day to night. They can take you from running errands, to work, to a date. Just make sure you know how to accessorize and dress them to the occasion.  Throw on a pair of statement heels and a jacket and you’re ready for a dinner party or to work, then wear them belted cuffed and some brogues for a casual cool look. Jeans transcend trends and seasons and take you through winter layered or summer with a light singlet. But remember to keep it basic. A dark wash or black are the most versatile that will form the basis of any great wardrobe.

1. Lee Super Skinny Jean- Black Night 2. Wrangler Twiggy Rinse Wash Jeans- Rinse Wash 3. Ziggy Tight Ass Jean- Got the Blues

5. Striped Benton Tee: A striped tee has, and will, always be a constant stay in the fashion world. From style icons like Jean Seberg to modern day favourite Olivia Palermo the striped tee can go with just about anything in your wardrobe. It is this easy versatility that makes it on constant rotate in your wardrobe and a must have staple item.

1. Weathered Alison Tee- Navy White 2. Betty Basics Britany Scoop Tee- White Black Stripe  3. Minkpink Innocence Raglan Tee- Navy Off White

6. A Statement Accessory: Whether it’s a necklace, bag, heels or earrings we all need that one statement accessory that when put on with any of the above combination makes the outfit not just a staple one but one that is truly you. Accessories are the way to make those simple yet classic outfits injected with your personality and your taste.

  1. Indy C Spike Stud Bag- Black   2. House of Harlow Extrusion Necklace- Gold   3. From St Xavier Tara Cuff- Real Turquoise

7. Classic Pair of Sunglasses: A great pair of fashionable yet timeless sunglasses has the ability to become part of your identity. Find a pair that suits your face shape, has a dark tint or reflective lens and is in a style that will forever be in fashion like wayfarer, aviator or slightly over shaped.

1. House of Harlow Cary Sunglasses- Black 2. Le Specs Runaways Sunglasses – Matte Violet  3. Minkpink Point Break Sunglasses- Shiny Gold

“Its dresses like these that I always fall for; simple and easy to style, yet with a cute quirky feel once you are wearing them. Starting to take on the bright colours this season, I am known to be a bit of a neutral dresser.”

Just like Nina did last week, I really felt I had to add a location snap! This is a photo I took during my travels to Europe last year from the top of the Bell Tower in Split, Croatia. The trip and the destinations I traveled to, especially Croatia, really inspired my wardrobe choices. The hot weather, the relaxed vibe and the beautiful colours are really reflective in my style now.

TRENDING: T-SHIRT DRESS

The t-shirt dress has been trending for some time now, first being recognized on the international runways back in 2009. However, year after year it is revamped and reinvented into something a bit more different, mimicking the surrounding trends of the season. This time around the t-shirt dress converts the trends through prints, graphics and neon colours. This is simple dressing at its best yet has a quirkiness of boyish charm. For that hot summer’s days throw on your t-shirt dress with some easy accessories and you’re out the door in 5 minutes flat or take cue from the model off duty look and pair with boots, belt and a jacket for those cooler evenings.

Although t-shirt dressing is an effortless style it must not be confused with sloppy dressing. This look can be done so you don’t end up looking like you’ve just rolled out of bed and into public. Accessories are key to making this look personally you so inject a bit of your own style through belts, necklaces, bags and footwear. Work with converse for a sporty cool look or pair with sandals or boots for a more fashion forward version. T-shirt dressing can also be translated into singlet dressing as shown in the Stussy Pegastuss dress. Singlet versions or cut-out shoulders like the Minkpink Speckles Tee Dress add a big of sexiness and intrigue. Or get inspiration from Vogue Fashion Editor and stylist Christine Centenera’s Givenchy tee shirt in the Stussy Stuvinchy Code Tee Dress. Opt for slim line cuts to avoid looking like you’re heading off to bed in your boyfriends tee and you have mastered the simple trend of t-shirt dressing!

Here at SurfStitch we are big fans of effortless and laid back styles like the ones below.

    1. Stussy Stuvinchy Code Tee Dress- Black      2.  Stussy Pegastuss Dress- Black     3. Minkpink Speckles Tee Dress- Red
