MBFWA 2013/14 Trends.

With a new name and a new location at the Carriageworks, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, or more recognised MBFWA, kicked off on Monday. As the most recognisable event on the fashion calendar, this is one week that shines through the fashion community with buyers, editors and bloggers all uniting. It is a sartorial dream with street style bloggers in their element capturing the outfit choices of the well know and those climbing the sartorial ladders. We look to this week in anticipation for the oncoming trends of Spring/ Summer 2013/14 and although we are currently heading straight into winter, by the look of the shows so far I’m calling summer to hurry up! Australian designers including Camilla and Marc who are celebrating 10 years in the business, Bec and Bridge, Ginger and Smart, Talulah, White Sands and Dion Lee have all shown so far and there are some dominant trends shining through the runways.

Read below for my picks of the upcoming trends and shop the looks at SurfStitch.

Monochrome

The monochrome look has carried through another season with black and white sported all through the runways. A regular feature on the runways this trend has taken a new form from Bec and Bridge’s pajama style pants and effortless dressing to the structured pieces of Dion Lee through to the girly lace looks at Ginger and Smart.

1. Friend of Mine Bike Crash Dress- White Black Splice  2. Sass Camilla Studded Tank- Black  3.Finders Keepers December Song Pant- Black White  4. Minty Meets Munt Crepe Blazer- Ivory Lace

Geometric Prints

With sports influences the geometric prints were featured heavily across modern silhouettes and intricate cuts. Camilla and Marc hailed this trend with it’s sophisticated dressing and high waists while Ginger and Smart took a more playful spin on the trend in bright hues. Shorts, crops and jackets were all spattered in this print to create defining lines and multiple layers. Take cue from the designers below and keep the focus on the clothes with barely there make-up and loose hair and you have a runway ready look in seconds.

In Bloom

Designer Kelli Wharton  of Talulah summed up the pretty floral trend simply as “colours and textures reminiscent of a spring garden.” With soft tailoring, elegant fabrics and pretty pastel florals in anything from high waisted bikinis, layered silk pant suits and classic shirts this trend quickly won me over.

Micro Trends

There were a few micro trends that stood out over the past few days. These are the little details that kept popping up on my radar and making me aware that these trends can be slightly injected into your wardrobe on a mini scale.. basically, you can either take it or leave it.

Alice McCall paraded her models in voluminous sleeves and mini skirts in this luxe hue. Shop the metallic trend at SurfStitch with these Neuw Marilyn Skinny Jeans.

Nothing was more reminiscent of long summer days in the sunshine than Karla Spetic’s delicate daisies. Mixed with luxurious sheer fabrics, daisies popped up in white, blue and bright pink across dresses and hemlines of skirts. Wear the daisies with this Minty Meets Munt Shifty Dress.

MBFWA continues until the end of the week and I couldn’t be more excited to see some of  SurfStitch favourite labels including Blessed Are The Meek and Shakuhachi showing today!

1 Item, 3 Ways

We all love and need those pieces in our wardrobes that we can wear time and time again. Some may call them ‘statements,’ ‘staples’ or their ‘go-to piece,’ whatever you call it, it’s all the same. It’s that item that you will have for years and pull out all winter long no matter if you’re going for a quick coffee with the girls, to the office or out for dinner.

This week’s feature: Shakuhachi Gypsy Tee Shift Dress. With an Asian inspired print in bold colours and a classic shape, this shift dress can be worn multiple ways. It’s the perfect length that it’s long enough as a short dress, yet short enough that you easily transform it into a tee by tucking it into a skirt or jeans. Keep your accessories basic and this dress will find home in your wardrobe in more places than one!

LOOK 1: CASUAL

Let the dress do the talking with it’s eye-catching print and easily versatile shape. By pairing it with simple accessories this makes for an effortless item that you throw on and you’re out the door in a second.

Monday Musings: The Beauty of Black.

This summer it’s been all about the colour – in the air, on our clothing and throughout the SurfStitch new arrivals! This Monday, as we’ve just crossed into Autumn, I’ve started thinking about the value in classic black. The colour that goes with everything, that forms the foundation for an outfit, that slims and that forms the basis for many wardrobe staples.

It’s classic, it’s chic and it’s an essential. Enjoy the beauty of black, and let it inspire your wardrobe essentials as we come into Autumn!

Obsession: Shirts Around Waist

You only need to take a look at the endless street style blog coverage of fashion week to know what trends and obsessions are circulating through the fashion world. One trend that we see continuously popping up in our feed are shirts tied around the waist otherwise known as the waist-wrap. Love it or hate it this trend is coming back in a big way. Hailing from the 90s grunge days, shirts tied around your waist have otherwise been non existent for years, kept in the past and remembered on the punks in mosh pits rocking the look with their band tees and doc martens. Tying your shirt around your waist is perfect for those transeasonal months when the weather is as unpredictable as your hair first thing in the morning!

A casual daytime staple, this is a great layering technique to break up an outfit or add a splash of colour. Whether you prefer the grungy plaid, leather or denim, this is one trend that is completely up to your personal choice and can be styled in numerous ways. Wear a plaid pattern over denim shorts, singlet and boots for a casual daytime look or dress it up with leather pieces, skinny jeans and heels like Taylor Tomasi Hill. From the runways of 3.1 Phillip Lim to celebrities like Rhianna and Kanye West, bloggers and stylists alike this look has quickly become a style favourite. Here at SurfStitch HQ we are completely obsessed, bring on the 90s we say!

1. Hurley Wilson Flannel Long Sleeve Shirt- Cinder   2. Tigerlily Mamluk Tank- Porcelain   3. Shakuhachi Rubberised Running Shorts- Black 4. Urge Kirsty Boot- Black

1. Stussy Flamingo Muscle- Black  2. All About Eve In Love Denim Shirt- Blue  3. Billabong Seeker Sundream Jean- Sundream  4. Valley DB Sunglasses- Gloss Black

Guys can rock this trend just as hard following in the footsteps of fashion royalty Kanye West and Pharrell Whilliams.

1. Zanerobe Spectrum Tee- Washed Out Black 2. DC Shoes Espinoza LS Shirt- DC Navy 3. Lee L0 Skinny Jean- Gallow Black 4. Kustom Scribe Shoe- Dark Navy
