With a new name and a new location at the Carriageworks, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, or more recognised MBFWA, kicked off on Monday. As the most recognisable event on the fashion calendar, this is one week that shines through the fashion community with buyers, editors and bloggers all uniting. It is a sartorial dream with street style bloggers in their element capturing the outfit choices of the well know and those climbing the sartorial ladders. We look to this week in anticipation for the oncoming trends of Spring/ Summer 2013/14 and although we are currently heading straight into winter, by the look of the shows so far I’m calling summer to hurry up! Australian designers including Camilla and Marc who are celebrating 10 years in the business, Bec and Bridge, Ginger and Smart, Talulah, White Sands and Dion Lee have all shown so far and there are some dominant trends shining through the runways.

Read below for my picks of the upcoming trends and shop the looks at SurfStitch.
Monochrome
The monochrome look has carried through another season with black and white sported all through the runways. A regular feature on the runways this trend has taken a new form from Bec and Bridge’s pajama style pants and effortless dressing to the structured pieces of Dion Lee through to the girly lace looks at Ginger and Smart.

Geometric Prints
With sports influences the geometric prints were featured heavily across modern silhouettes and intricate cuts. Camilla and Marc hailed this trend with it’s sophisticated dressing and high waists while Ginger and Smart took a more playful spin on the trend in bright hues. Shorts, crops and jackets were all spattered in this print to create defining lines and multiple layers. Take cue from the designers below and keep the focus on the clothes with barely there make-up and loose hair and you have a runway ready look in seconds.

In Bloom
Designer Kelli Wharton of Talulah summed up the pretty floral trend simply as “colours and textures reminiscent of a spring garden.” With soft tailoring, elegant fabrics and pretty pastel florals in anything from high waisted bikinis, layered silk pant suits and classic shirts this trend quickly won me over.

Micro Trends
There were a few micro trends that stood out over the past few days. These are the little details that kept popping up on my radar and making me aware that these trends can be slightly injected into your wardrobe on a mini scale.. basically, you can either take it or leave it.

Alice McCall paraded her models in voluminous sleeves and mini skirts in this luxe hue. Shop the metallic trend at SurfStitch with these Neuw Marilyn Skinny Jeans.

Nothing was more reminiscent of long summer days in the sunshine than Karla Spetic’s delicate daisies. Mixed with luxurious sheer fabrics, daisies popped up in white, blue and bright pink across dresses and hemlines of skirts. Wear the daisies with this Minty Meets Munt Shifty Dress.
MBFWA continues until the end of the week and I couldn’t be more excited to see some of SurfStitch favourite labels including Blessed Are The Meek and Shakuhachi showing today!
